Vintage 1946 Chic Checked Cloche & Bag Set # 245

Hat Size:  Medium
Bag Size:  Approximately 14” by 8”

Materials:   
For Hat:
Bucilla Strawkraft or Fleisher’s Straw-Twist, 4 balls White [W], 1 ball Black [B]
1 Steel Crochet Hook #3
1 Steel Crochet Hook #1

For Bag:
Bucilla Strawkraft or Fleisher’s Straw-Twist, 3 balls White [W], 2 ball Black [B]
1 Steel Crochet Hook #3
Lining Material
1 Large Button

Gauge
For Hat:  5 rnds dc = 2”;     7 rnds hdc = 2”
For Bag:  13 dc = 2”:     3 rows = 1”

CROWN: 
With #1 hook * W, ch 6, 2 dc in 3rd st from hook, 1 dc in each of next 2 sts, 6 dc in last st; cont on other side of ch work 1 dc in each of 2 sts, 3 dc in same st as 1st 2 dc; 16 sts, count ch 2 as a st.  Do not join.  Mark end of rnds, cont around.

2nd rnd:  2 Dc in top of ch 2, 2 dc in each dc; 32 sts.

3rd rnd:  * 1 Dc in next st, 2 dc in next st; rep from * around; 48 sts.

4th rnd:  * 1 Dc in each of 5 sts, 2 dc in next st; rep from * around; 56 sts.

5th rnd:  * 1 Dc in each of 7 sts, 2 dc in next st; rep from * around; 63 sts.

6th rnd:  * 1 Dc in each of 6 sts, 2 dc in next st; rep from * around; 72 sts.

7th rnd:  * 1 Dc in each of 5 sts, 2 dc in next st; rep from * around; 84 sts.

Fasten ends of a 22” piece of wire tog to form a circle about 6 ½” diameter.

8th rnd:  Working over wire, work * 1 sc in each of 13 sts, 2 sc in next st; rep from * around; 90 sts.

9th rnd:  Inserting hook in back loop of each st, 1 sc in each st.

10th to 15th rnds:  1 Hdc in each st, inserting hook in both loops.

16th rnd:  1 Hdc in each of 2 sts, 2 hdc in next st, 1 hdc in each of 84 sts, 2 hdc in next st, 1 hdc in each of last 2 sts; 92 sts.  Work 2 rnds even in hdc.

19th rnd:  1 Hdc in each of 2 sts, 2 hdc in next st, 1 hdc in each of 85 sts, 2 hdc in next st, 1 hdc in each of 2 sts, 2 hdc in last st; 95 sts. 

Side of crown should measure about 3”.

BRIM: 
1st rnd:  Inserting hook in front loop only, 1 hdc in each of 7 sts, * 2 hdc in next st, 1 hdc in each of next 2 sts; rep from * 26 times, 2 hdc in next st, 1 hdc in each remaining st; 123 sts.  Inserting hook in both loops as before, work even in hdc for 4 rnds.

Fasten ends of a 28” piece of wire tog to form a circle about 8” in diameter.

Final rnd: 
Working over wire, work 1 sc in each st, slip st in next st.  Fasten off.

TRIMMING: 
With B & #3 hook, ch 15. 

Work checked pattern as for handle of bag for 74 rows.  Fasten off. 

Sew band around crown as illustrated.

HANDBAG: 
With B, ch 96.

1st row:  1 Dc in 4th st from hook, 1 dc in each of next 2 sts, working off last 2 loops of last dc with W, * cont with W working over B, work 1 dc in each of next 3 sts, working off last 2 loops of last dc with B; with B working over W, work 1 dc in each of next 3 sts, work off last 2 loops of last dc with W; rep from * across row.

2nd row:  With W, ch 3 working over B work 1 dc in each of 1st 3 sts, working off last 2 loops of last dc with B, * work 3 dc with B, 3 dc with W always changing colors & working over color not being used as before; rep from * to end.
3rd row:  With B, ch 3, work 3 dc, * 3 dc with W, 3 dc with B; rep from * to end.

Cont. checked pat as in last 2 rows until 8 rows from beg.

9th row:  Work 1st 21 sts in checked pat, working off last 2 loops of last dc with W, drop B; using WHITE ONLY work center 51 sts in dc, working off last 2 loops of last dc with separate ball of B, work checked pat on remaining 21 sts.

Cont to work 21 sts each side in checked pat, working over color not being used as before & center 51 sts with WHITE ONLY, until 44 rows from beg.

45th row:  Work checked pat across entire row: fasten off 2nd ball of B. 

Work checked pat for 7 more rows.  Fasten off W. 

Work 1 row sl st with B. 

Work 1 row sc around all 4 sides of piece with B, keeping work flat, inc at corners.  Fasten off.

HANDLE: 
With B, ch 15, work checked pat on 12 sts until 48 rows.  Fasten off W. 

Work 1 row sl st with B.  Fasten off. 

FINISHING: 
Block each piece. 

Fold bag in half & sew side edges. 

LINE BAG
Finished Linings with zippers attached may be purchased ready-made; or may be made using suitable lining material & buckram for stiffening. 

Cut buckram ¼” smaller than bag on all sides, cover with lining & sew into bag with zipper at opening. 

Sew 1 end of handle to center back of bag & other end to center front as illustrated. 

Sew button at center of each end of handle. 

Sew on zipper fastener pull.

Note:  Cardboard or lightweight plastic may be inserted between bag & lining to give shape of bag extra support.

MISS JULIA’S PURSE LINING NOTES:
Make paper patt for each crocheted piece before joinings & lay aside to be used later.

Cut lining according to paper patts & sew tog. 

Shirr lining bag form to correspond with crocheted bag.

Insert finished lining in bag.  Sew in zipper [if desired].

Note: 
Cardboard or lightweight plastic may be inserted between bag & lining to give shape of bag extra support.

Vintage Vogue 1940s Buttoned & Bound Sweater #196

Elegant yoked sweater, buttoned and bound with an openwork knit stitch, is a delight to create and wear  Imagine this up-dated and worked with a contrasting color for the yoke and the bound trim.  A successful addition to your multi-season wardrobe.

SIZES: 
Directions are for size 14.

MATERIALS: 
Spinnerin Spindrift, Softa or Nylana, 12 [14-15] 1-oz balls
#3 Knitting needles                                    
#4 Crochet hook
12 Buttons                                                    
Shoulder pads
Seam binding

GAUGE: 
15 sts = 2”;
10 rows = 1”

PATTERN: 
REVERSE STOCKINETTE ST:
P side is right side.

OPENWORK ST: [Multiple of 12 plus 7]. 
1st row:  [right side]  P.

2nd row:  K 3, * yo, k 2 tog, k 10, repeat from * ending yo, k 2 tog, k 2.

3rd row:  P.

4th row:  K .  repeat rows 3 and 4.

7th row:  P 3, * insert right-hand needle into top and bottom loops of yo opening 4 rows below and sl these 2 loops onto left-hand needle, then p these 2 loops tog, p next 2 sts tog, p 10; repeat from * ending p 2 tog, p 2.

8th row:  K

9th row:  P.

10th row:  K 9; repeat from * in row 2, ending yo, k 2 tog, k 8.

11th row:  P. 

12th row:  K.  Repeat rows 11 and 12.

15th row:  P 9; repeat from * in row 7, ending p 2 tog, p 8.

16th row:  K.  Repeat these 16 rows for pattern.

BACK: 
Cast on 127 sts. 

Work in openwork pattern. 

Work even for 2” 

Dec 1 st each end of next row once, then every 4th row 11 times [103 sts]. 

Work even until 7 ½” from beg [waistline]. 

Inc 1 st each end once, then every 4th row 11 times [127 sts]. 

Work even until 15” from beg or desired length to underarm.

SHAPE ARMHOLE: 
Bind off 7 sts at beg of next 2 rows. 

Then dec 1 st each end every other row 9 times [95 sts]. 

Work even until 7 ½” from bound-off sts.

SHAPE SHOULDER: 
Bind off 6 sts at beg of next 10 rows. 

Bind off remaining 35 sts for neck. 

POCKET LININGS [Make 2]: 
Cast on 46 sts. 

Work in reverse stockinette st for 3” ending with a k row.  Sl on holder.

RIGHT FRONT: 
Cast on 74 sts. 

Start openwork pattern.

1st row:  K 6, yo, k 2 tog, k 10;p repeat from * in row 2 of pattern ending yo, k 2 tog, k 6. 

Continue in pattern. 

Work even for 2”; and at same time work first buttonhole on 15th pattern row.

BUTTONHOLE: 
With wrong side facing, work to within 9 sts of end of row, bind off 5 sts, work to end. 

On next row cast on 5 sts above bound-off sts.  Repeat buttonhole every 3” [6 buttonholes in all]. 

Keeping center-front edge even, dec 1 st at underarm edge once, then every 3rd row 16 times [57 sts]. 

Work even until same length as back to waistline. 

Inc 1 st at underarm edge once, then every 3rd row 18 times [76 sts]. 

Work even until same length as back to underarm.

SHAPE ARMHOLOE: 
Bind off 6 sts at armhole edge once, then 2 sts every other row 3 times. 

Then dec 1 st every other row 7 times; and at same time as first bind-off, work 7 sts, sl next 46 sts on holder and hold in front of work, sl 46 pocket lining sts on left-hand needle, having p side facing, p to end of row [57 sts]. 

Change to reverse stockinette st.

SHAPE NECK: 
Dec 1 st at neck every 3rd row 3 times, then every other row until 30 sts remain. 

When armhole is same length as back SHAPE SHOULDER: 

Bind off 6 sts at beg of armhole edge every other row 5 times.  End off.

POCKET: 
Sl 23 sts from holder. 

Attach yarn, work across in pattern. 

Keeping pattern, bind off 4 sts at beg of next 4 rows. 

Bind off remaining 7 sts. 

Work other half to correspond.  

LEFT FRONT: 
Work to correspond to right front.

SLEEVE: 
Cast on 45 sts.  Start pattern.

1st row:  P.

2nd row:  K 4; repeat from * in row 2 of pattern, ending yo, k 2 tog, k 3. 

Keeping pattern, inc 1 st each end every ¾” 14 times; then every ½”, 12 times [97 sts]. 

Work even until 17 ½” from beg or desired length to underarm.

SHAPE CAP: 
Bind off 7 sts at beg of next 2 rows. 

Dec 1 st each end every 3rd row until 5” from bound off sts. 

Bind off 3 sts at beg of next 10 rows. 

Bind off remaining sts. 

BIAS BAND: 
Cast on 14 sts. 

Work in reverse stockinette st. 

Dec 1 st at beg and inc 1 st at end every k row until band is long enough to fit around front and neck edges. 

Make 2 more bands to fit across top edge of each pocket, allowing for loop. 

TUBULAR BUTTONS [make 6]: 
Ch 3, join to form a ring. 

Work 8 sc in ring. 

Work 2 sc in each st around [16 sc].  Mark beg of rnd. 

Work 2 rnds even. 

Place a button inside of circle and work 10 more rnds even. 

Stuff button with cotton or yarn until tube is firm, then place another button over stuffing and dec 11 sts on next rnd. 

Break off, draw up opening tightly, fasten off. 

FINISHING: 
Sew seams. 

Sew in sleeves. 

Tack pocket lining to wrong side. 

With right side facing, work 1 row sc around all edges, easing in neck to fit. 

With right sides facing, sew band along center-front edge and around neck, then fold band over to wrong side and hem along crochet edge. 

Fold pocket bands in half forming tube. 

Sew on pockets forming loop at center [see photo]. 

Buttonhole st around buttonholes. 

Block to size. 

Sew on buttons. 

Reinforce shoulder seams with seam binding. 

Tack in shoulder pads.

Vintage 1940s Knitted Moss Stitch Bag #288

MATERIALS:
7 tubes Corticelli Daisy Gimp
1 Pair #13 Knitting Needles
2/3 yd - 42” Satin Lining
½ yd Buckram
1 Bracelet

GAUGE: 
7 sts = 1”

BODY: 
Cast on 113 sts & work in ms [k 1, p 1 across every row] for 20”.  Cast off. 

Press on wrong side with a damp cloth to 16” x 20”.

HANDLE: 
Cast on 33 sts & work in ms for 18”.  Cast off. 

Press on wrong side with damp cloth.

BRACELET PIECE: 
Cast on 7 sts & work in ms for few rows [to fit around bracelet].  Cast off.

FINISHING: 
Line handle with double lining. 

Fold body of bag in half to form a 16” x 10” pouch & sew side seams. 

Mark centre of each top edge & make a 3” box pleat, having marker in centre of pleat. 

Baste pleat, sewing across top edge only. 

Sew small ms piece over bracelet & stitch to outside of box pleat ½” down from top.  Remove bastings. 

Cut a piece of lining 16 ½” x 20” & a piece of buckram 15 ½” x 19”. 

Centre buckram on lining having ½” of lining extending around all edges.  Baste into place. 

Fold in half with buckram on outside & sew sides taking ½” seams. 

Turn so that seams are on inside. 

Baste 3” box pleats as on crocheted piece. 

Sew top edge of pleats securely. 

Remove box pleat bastings from lining. 

Insert lining in bag & sew to bag along the two side seams. 

Baste lining ½” from top of bag, cutting away any surplus material. 

Sew across pleats only. 

Cut inner lining 16” x 20”, make side seams & baste box pleats. 

Sew handles in place over each box pleat. 

Place lining in bag & sew around top, turning in all raw edges. 

Draw handle thru bracelet.
